Drug Name: METHADONE HCL

METHADONE HCL DESCRIPTION:
METHADONE LIQUID - ORAL (METH-uh-doan)

METHADONE HCL SIDE EFFECTS:
May cause constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, stomach upset, nausea, and flushing the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or become bothersome, inform your doctor. To minimize constipation, increase your intake of fiber, drink plenty of water, and exercise. Stool softeners may be helpful. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about stool softeners and laxatives. Notify your doctor if you develop irregular heartbeat, anxiety or tremors. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

HOW TO USE METHADONE HCL:
METHADONE HCL: Take METHADONE HCL only by mouth. To prevent upset stomach, take with food or milk. Take this as prescribed. Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time without your doctor's approval. Also, if used for a long period of time at high doses, do not suddenly stop taking this without first consulting your doctor. When used for extended periods, METHADONE HCL may not work as well and may require different dosing. Consult your doctor if the medication isn't working properly.

METHADONE HCL WARNING:
Methadone is to be taken by mouth only. It must not be injected. Methadone is a synthetic narcotic. Patients who are physically dependent on narcotics will go through withdrawal syndrome if given the usual dose of a narcotic antagonist (e.g., naloxone). If a narcotic antagonist must be given, the dose must be smaller than the usual dose and it must be given with extreme care.

METHADONE HCL USES:
This is used for narcotic addiction or for severe pain.

METHADONE HCL PRECAUTIONS:
Tell your doctor your medical history especially of stomach problems (e.g., colitis), of substance abuse problems and of any allergies. Use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Alcoholic beverages may add to the effects of METHADONE HCL causing dizziness or drowsiness. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about alcohol use. METHADONE HCL should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. METHADONE HCL is excreted into breast milk and may affect the infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

METHADONE HCL DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may be using especially MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), psychiatric drugs, tranquilizers, sleep medications, zidovudine, rifampin, other narcotic pain relievers, barbiturates, cimetidine, anti-seizure drugs, certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine) or alcohol. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

METHADONE HCL OVERDOSE:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include cold and clammy skin, low body temperature, slowed breathing, slowed heartbeat, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, deep sleep, and loss of consciousness.

METHADONE HCL NOTES:
Do not share METHADONE HCL with others. It is against the law.

MISSED METHADONE HCL DOSE:
If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

METHADONE HCL STORAGE:
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
