Drug Name: DOCUSATE SODIUM DOCUSATE SODIUM DESCRIPTION: DOCUSATE - ORAL (DOCK-you-sate) COMMON DOCUSATE SODIUM BRAND NAME(S): Colace, Dialose, DSS, Surfak DOCUSATE SODIUM SIDE EFFECTS: DOCUSATE SODIUM may cause stomach ache, cramping or irritated throat (liquid forms). If these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: skin rash, rectal bleeding, lack of bowel movements. Frequent use of laxatives can cause dehydration and loss of essential nutrients. Symptoms include muscle cramps, muscle weakness or dizziness. Maintain an adequate fluid intake while using DOCUSATE SODIUM. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. HOW TO USE DOCUSATE SODIUM: DOCUSATE SODIUM: Swallow capsules and tablets whole with a full glass of water or juice. Liquid forms (not syrup) may be taken with milk or juice to improve flavor. Relief is usually obtained in 1 to 2 days after first dose, but can take as long as 3 to 5 days. DOCUSATE SODIUM USES: DOCUSATE SODIUM helps fluids to mix with the stool to keep them from becoming hard or dry. It is used to treat constipation. DOCUSATE SODIUM PRECAUTIONS: Do not take aspirin (unless prescribed by your doctor) or mineral oil while taking stool softeners. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, do not take over-the-counter stool softeners (or any other nonprescription medication) without obtaining your doctor's advice. DOCUSATE SODIUM OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. DOCUSATE SODIUM NOTES: Laxatives should only be used temporarily until normal bowel habits return. Prolonged use can lead to laxative dependence. To prevent constipation: drink 4 to 6 glasses of water daily, include bulk or roughage in your diet, and exercise regularly. MISSED DOCUSATE SODIUM DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up. DOCUSATE SODIUM STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture. |
